Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can be caused by many different factors, and understanding the root cause of your tinnitus will help you to find the right tinnitus remedies to cure it.

Some of the underlying causes of tinnitus are;

  • Noise Damage – Probably THE most common cause of tinnitus, the small nerves of the ear are damaged by working in a noisy environment, being exposed regularly to loud noise or even using your iPod at excessive levels, this damage causes hearing loss to varying degrees
  • Nerve Damage – damage to the complex nerves that run between the ear and the brain can cause communication problems the brain will try to correct the lack of information being passed over by creating its own noises.
  • Middle Ear Effusion – Possible causes are inflammation or infection of the middle ear, excess fluid gathers in the passages of the middle ear causing the sufferer to hear pulsating noises and perhaps their own heart beat.
  • Tumours and brain haemorrhage (aneurism) – Tumours of various types within the ear can cause tinnitus, this is one reason that it is essential to get your tinnitus diagnosed by your doctor before attempting self-help
  • Meniere’s Disease – Caused by problems with the inner ear fluid pressure this is a common cause of tinnitus
  • Depression and Stress – Your body’s way of letting you know you need to take care of yourself
  • High Cholesterol – high cholesterol can restrict the blow flow to the neck and head causing pulsating tinnitus.

As you can see there are many underlying causes of tinnitus and some of them are really life threatening, others could be caused by avoidable damage and lifestyle choices. You should always seek advice and diagnosis from your doctor before embarking on any course of self help.
